On October 27, 2016, students at Iowa State University awoke to find several campus buildings covered with white supremacist posters, reflecting a growing tide of hate crimes both domestically and internationally. As an international student and MFA candidate at Iowa State, Bilawal Khoso—known as BK to friends—responded by wielding the tool he knows best: graphic design. Every day, graphic design is used to change minds and alter behavior, so why not use it to bring people together? BK named the project GET—Get together, Get along. GET is a mixed media installation, featuring photo portraits of seven individuals, each from a different minority group, each dedicated to serving the local community in and around Iowa State. By learning to see the person, not the box, BK explains, we can learn to live life “unboxed,” without prejudice and preconceptions. Bilawal Khoso is an assistant professor of art at Graceland University in Iowa. He holds an MFA in Graphic Design from Iowa State University.
